How CBD is Regulated for Pet Use

NAVIGATING A CONFUSING REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT
While there are many CBD pet products out there, from a regulatory standpoint, CBD falls into a category of ingredients not currently being officially reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Because of this, there are some companies in the marketplace that sell these products without quality manufacturing and safety practices and or label them with drug-like claims.
The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), a well-known trade coalition and certification body, is working to bridge that gap. In consultation with the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, the NASC provides regulatory guidance to oversee the manufacturing quality, safety, marketing, and distribution of CBD pet products.
At this time, CBD products that bear the NASC Quality Seal can be sold in 47 states—all except the District of Columbia, Idaho, and Mississippi.
Canopy Animal Health is proud to have voluntarily adopted the strict NASC criteria for quality, safety, and marketing practices. For example, we label how much CBD is in each serving and in the total package, and test every unique lot of product with an independent, qualified analytical laboratory. You will find the NASC Quality Seal displayed on all our CBD pet products.
The regulatory landscape for CBD is always evolving. We’ll continue to update this article with the latest information.
